Whether you are looking to build solar panels from scratch or buying an off the shelf solar kit, you should educate yourself on the components. In order to implement a solar energy system you need four basic components: solar pv panels, inverter, charge controller, and battery bank.

There are a few steps you need to take before you begin the construction of a panel.

-First obtain a solar panel. Most people opt for a 180 watt solar panel. Smaller systems such as a 45 watt solar kit can be connected directly to individual electric tools if you are working in a shed. The higher the wattage on the solar panel, the more you will save in terms of cost per watt of electricity.

- Next, you will need a charge controller. A charge controller stops the current from disconnecting and going in reverse back to the solar pv panels. It is very important for regulating the direction of the current.

-Third, you will need a battery bank. A battery such as a 12V lead battery can be arranged to create a battery bank. This bank will store electricity for use at night or on cloudy days.

- Lastly, you will need to convert that electricity from the direct current that solar pv panels produce to alternating current (AC). This is done by putting the current through an inverter. Inverters are then tied into the grid or directly to the wiring in the house.

Implementing your own solar panel system can be extremely rewarding. The cost per watt of solar power is dropping dramatically. You can do it yourself if you feel you have the time and patience. This will save you even more money and can provide a great building project.
