Why AGM Batteries?

Agm batteries are deep cycle batteries - meaning that you can discharge them for a great deal longer than most conventional batteries without damaging them. While many people do discharge their normal batteries for a long time before recharging them, they may not realise that this is actually causing damage and so shortening the overall life of the battery. If you want your battery to last for several years, you should never keep your appliances running until the lights start to dim.

The agm battery has many advantages over the conventional battery.

• It is a sealed unit and thus can be stored on its side or even its end if necessary without harm. Even during transport the agm battery need not be upright.
• It does not need to be kept in a sealed box with an external vent.
• It never needs to be topped up with water.
• It will recharge fully from a lower voltage and in much less time than the conventional battery. 2-3 hours will see it fully charged. Standard batteries – even good quality ones – need 8-12 hours of continuous running to achieve an 80% charge from a vehicle's alternator.
• The agm battery can occasionally be discharged deeply without harming the unit.
• They only discharge around 3% per month when sitting idle. This means that after 12 months of non-use you can recharge an agm battery and it will be good to use. A standard battery would be unusable by that time.

Agm (Absorbed Glass Matt) batteries were originally designed for use in the army and so they will withstand a great deal of rough and tumble, making them the ideal battery to take when off-road camping. So using an agm battery will be cheaper in the long run, but it will also be safer. Being totally sealed, it is also ideal for use in boats of all kinds.
