If you travel overseas frequently, you can save yourself time and aggravation by assembling your own voltage transformer kit to pack along with you. When you carry your own lightweight voltage converter and an assortment of accessories, you'll nearly always be able to use your own appliances and personal care products, no matter where in the world you are.

The anchor of your travel electronics conversion kit is a voltage transformer that can cover a wide range of needs. The most versatile, top-of-the-line converters can handle voltage conversion in either direction, and eliminate the need for separate converters to transform 110/120 V to 220/240 V and 220/240 V to 110/120 V. In order to be able to use it with the widest variety of appliances, choose a switchable converter that can be used at 50-watt capacity for electronics, such as cell phone chargers, PDAs and battery chargers, or switched to 1,600 watts for use with electrical appliances such as hair dryers, curling irons, travel irons and coffee makers.

Plug Adaptors

In addition to the converter, your kit should also include a variety of plug adapters that are compatible with it. After all, your converter is useless if you can't plug it into a power supply. Extend your travel electronics capacity by including a travel adapter for USB powered devices, such as your iPod or cell phone, with international plug adapters. Most only take up a few inches in your suitcase, and allow you to use your full-size adapters for larger appliances.

Travel Surge Protector

Protect your delicate electronics on the road just as you would at home. A compact, self-contained surge protector with slide-out plugs can help protect your laptop, chargers and other devices from electrical surges. Most don't convert voltage, so you'll need to plug it into a voltage converter so that all your devices are on the right page.

You can assemble your own travel electronics kit, or save yourself the trouble by buying a travel voltage converter transformer kit that includes everything you'll need. In most cases, a pre-assembled kit will cost about the same as choosing your own pieces, and carry the added advantage of coming in a convenient, compact carrying case to keep everything organized in your suitcase.
