Charging laptop batteries while on the move provides convenience as well as reduces the stress of not being able to access your laptop when you need it most. So how do you do it?

The best way is to use a smaller version of a laptop charger that's commonly known as a trickle charger or a car charger. This is a slow battery charger but there is the advantage that an overcharge possibility is avoided. You could even keep your battery indefinitely in the trickle charger without any qualms. But there are certain precautions to take.

• Make sure you read the user's guide carefully so that you know where the remote charging point is situated.
• Check the battery. There will be insulating covers to protect the two terminals of the battery. Then, quite carefully, remove these covers by sliding them out.
• You have to now connect this to the charger unit in the vehicle. The charger you are using will have to be connected between the terminals of the battery and the electrical outlet in the vehicle. You will have to check if the cables reach properly. If they don't, you will have to probably use an extension cord to do the job.
• Trickle chargers will connect to the laptop batteries by means of clamps. There are two clamps; one red and one black. The red clamp has to be connected to the positive terminal of the battery and the black clamp to the negative terminal.
• Keeping the charger in off position, plug it in.
• Select the voltage and charging rate that the manual recommends. When done, start the charging operation.

Now, though a trickle charger can adequately do the job for you, if you commute often, here are two recommendations that you could put to use.

• Buy an extended battery that has about 4 to 5 hours of charge. The battery that the manufacturer provides in your laptop isn't with extended charge usually. So, you might have to consider buying an extended battery as a means of backup.
• As far as possible, use the car charger to charge up your laptop battery. Even if your battery is completely dead, you could use your laptop with the car charger directly.
