The creation of this tool was initiated by the World Health Organization. The organization went to many companies and requested that they try to develop a low-cost, easy to use, solar-powered device that could measure blood pressure.

The cost of the tool is low because it does not use the high cost rechargeable batteries that standard tools use. Having a low-cost, solar-powered blood pressure measuring tool will be incredibly important in low-income countries where things like electricity and batteries can be hard to get. It is also important because hypertension, the main cause of heart attacks and strokes, is dramatically increasing in countries will very low income levels.
