When we started building our first solar panel a major sticking point was where to purchase solar cells. I had been searching and had found several different websites that had solar cells for sale the only problem was they were way to expensive! I had started wanting to build a solar panel because I thought I would be saving a lot of money. The cells I had found would have cost more than buying an actual panel.

I knew there was a way to build inexpensive solar panels, but I just hadn't found it yet. As it happened I discovered a cheap source of good quality solar cells entirely by accident. We had built a wind generator a couple months back and I wanted to upgrade the hub to a nice aluminum one. My favorite place for parts has been eBay. After I got the hub I decided to do a quick search for solar cells.

It was such a great moment! There were easily over 50 auctions selling cells. The only problem was there were two types of cells: tabbed and un-tabbed. After a little bit of research I discovered what the difference was.

Solar cells need little pieces of wire attached to the face of the cell (called tabbing wire) in order for them to produce energy (the front produces negative and the back is positive). I decided to get the tabbed cells because it would make it easier to build my first panel (I later tried tabbing and it's quite a time consuming process).

If you're building your first panel check out eBay as they have the best prices I've found (that's still true). I also recommend getting tabbed cells simply because it's a pain to build a panel with un-tabbed cells.

I built my own solar panels and a wind generator and saved well over $30,000. I get a cheque from the power company because I produce more energy than I use.Learn how you can do the same check out Buy Solar Cells.
