The pocket watch was at one time a very fashionable statement for a well dressed man. Suits were designed to accommodate the stylish man of the period. It was often crafted of gold or some other precious metal and had a chain that allowed it to be fastened to the mans clothing and be pulled from its resting place in the special pocket to be viewed and returned without fear of dropping it. The pocket for the pocket watch was generally located in the vest of the mans suit. The gold chain hung gently out of the pocket as part of the decorum of the vest.

The pocket watch of yesteryear usually had a hinged cover on it that would swing open to revel that face of the watch. These mechanisms were usually hand wound and the covers were rather ornate. The winding device sat on top of the watch. They were almost always round and could easily fit in the palm or your hand. Typically there was a second hand in addition to the hour and minute hands.

These were great time pieces and from the mid eighteen hundreds until the mid nineteen hundreds they were the favored way for a gentleman to tell time.

What Happened to Pocket Watches

They are still available although they have been out of fashion for a very long time. The time that they were in fashion was a much simpler time, today everything is high speed and efficiency has far surpassed style as more important to telling time.

There are so many other options available for telling time that most men cannot be bothered with the idea of having to reach into a pocket open up the time piece, wind it up everyday and generally tote it around.

Styles are much more casual today then they were a hundred years ago. Men very rarely dress in the fashion of the formal three piece suit any more, using a pocket watch is just impractical for today's modern man.

Today a pocket watch is given more as a collectors piece than to be used as a practical way to tell time. They are enjoyed for their beauty then largely put away to be pulled out on special occasions.

Other Applications

There are other applications that a pocket watch is used for. They are often used for sporting events as stop watches. They look for all intent and purposes like pocket watches except they are not very ornate nor do they have a hinged cover. They do tell time and they are kept in pockets until it is ready to use them.

Pocket watches are a great reminder of days gone by when even telling time was done formally.
