Green Power: What Is It And Why Use It?

Green power is the production of electricity without having a bad impact on the earth. The main types are solar, wind, and geothermal. All of these are renewable resources and other than the production of the equipment, have little or no impact on the earth. They are cleaner than conventional sources and do not contribute to acid rain or air pollution.

Green power really makes sense when you realize that conventional ways of producing electricity are the major cause of air pollution. Green power as defined by the EPA is electricity produced without any greenhouse gas emissions making it the most superior of all electricity produced. Across the nation there are several Green Power communities, the number one community is Corvallis, Oregon which uses 12% green energy for its community needs.

Green power can be produced by using a wind turbine. A turbine usually has two or three blades that are connected to a rotor. The rotor is connected to a main shaft which spins a generator to produce electricity. The turbine is mounted on a tower around 100 feet in the air so it can get the stronger winds. The use of a turbine is one of the simplest ways to create truly green energy.

Green power can also be produced using geothermal methods. With this method power plants drill into the earth as in digging wells. The steam is brought to the surface through pipes and converted to electricity. The majority of Iceland uses geothermal energy for its hot water source. This is a renewable resource but is an expensive one to put into operation at this time.

Green power also come from the sun. This is probably the most well known form of green energy. The idea behind this is the use of solar panels to collect the sunlight and convert it into electricity or for heating water. People can make their own solar panels if they desire. There are several books, guides and videos to help accomplish this. The most common form is the on grid system which allows people to stay tied into the utility company and sell excess power back to the company to lower their monthly bills.

Green power is something we all need to get serious about. We are running out of fossil fuels and none of the above mentioned sources use any of these. The air we breathe is getting more polluted everyday from greenhouse gases. We need to protect ourselves and future generations by learning all we can about better ways of producing the energy we use.
