I was just reading some interesting information in an article on motorcycle batteries. They have lead acid batteries just like the batteries in your car, only smaller. They don't need as much power as a car battery because the engine is smaller in a bike. Most bikes do not get used during the winter when the cold causes the battery to lose power. And they have less space to put the battery in.

What is the same is how they work, and how they fail. Most fail when the lead plates get covered by crystals of lead sulphate. This sulphate acts as an insulator and prevents the electrons from flowing. As the plates get covered the battery can deliver less power when you need it. It gets weak and then, probably a cold morning, it won't start the motorcycle. Maybe it started the day before, when it was warm! You can put it on a charger but the battery will not always be ready. Even if you use a trickle charger - some day it will not have power.

This is a normal consequence of lead & acid batteries. You can't get away from it. It happens faster when the battery is charged too fast or runs down too low in charge. This is why a battery that is being used may have a shorter life than one that is always resting. Because as you are driving, the battery is being charged. You can postpone this problem by using a de-sulphating device or a charger that has the ability to de-sulphate. The article I was reading said with one of these chargers the author had gotten 7+ years out of a battery. Most bikes get 2 to 3 years! This works by using a high frequency pulse to break the crystals off the lead plates and dissolve them back into the acid. This is amazing stuff!

One of the companies making chargers and also the de-sulphating device you can mount on your motorcycle is VDC electronics. They make the BatteryMinder. I have been using them for a short time now. I can't claim personal experience with extra long life of a battery. But I do have several hooked up to keep my batteries charged on the vehicles that don't get used every day. They automatically switch from full charging to a maintenance (trickle) charge. I have had no problems when I needed these vehicles since using these chargers.

So check out the latest in battery chargers and keep yours ready to ride!

I sell battery chargers for motorcycles, cars and airplanes. They are solar powered or plug in. Look for the best chargers on http://www.solarbatterychargerdepot.com and you won't be disappointed!
