Adding color and depth to a backyard becomes a simple process if you have a swimming pool to work with. Lighting solutions for pools are quickly becoming a popular means of backyard design for their cost effectiveness and ease of use. When combined with intoxicating landscape design, swimming pools become a center-point for backyard beauty.

Pool Lighting

Swimming pool lights today offer so much more than a bland in-wall light source of a single color. For example, light systems from Aquaglow project a rainbow of beautiful colors on the pool floor. As the battery-powered globes float around in the water, the lights appear to dance and sway. Another example of colorful pool lighting are floating garden lights. Commonly in the form of beautiful flowers or lily pads, these lights are also battery powered and float around the pool. To completely eliminate the need to fish out the lights to turn them on/off, consider a solar powered solution. Solar powered pool lights are equipped with a sensor which tells them when to turn on and off depending on the ambient light outside.

Landscaping

Pool landscaping can be slightly more involved than the addition of pool lights depending on how intensive you want to be in the design process. Plants added around the pool can be accented with small spotlights to keep them in view during the night. Pools often have several feet of decking around their edges, preventing users from planting directly into the ground around the pool. In this case, pots can be used to bring the plants closer and add a decorative touch. If your pool has a waterfall, plants can be placed among the rocks for a surreal touch. If soil is not accessible, small pots can be covered in the decorative rock surrounding the waterfall. The hidden pots will require regular watering being that the plants' roots do not have access to the ground.
