Dave J Smith asked:

What sort of residential solar power system to you require? Before setting to work building your own residential solar power system you must first ask yourself what your requirements are.

The three types of residential solar power systems which can be integrated into your home. Three types are utility-tie systems, utility-interactive system and what is sometimes referred to as a stand-alone system.

Utility-Tie System

Utility tie systems do not have a battery equipment associated with the unit. In this type of system all electric power created by solar panels travels through the inverter and offsets the power that would normally be consumed from the power company. This type of system slows or reverses your meter dependent on the amount of solar power created. This type of system is popular because there are no batteries to purchase. Because there are no batteries associated in the system, the system will only function when there is direct sunlight and will not function at night.

Utility-Interactive System

This type of system is similar to the utility tie in although it does have a battery and additional controls. The utility interactive system will feed the utility meter and will allow you to operate fully off the grid. Depending on the overall size of your solar power system and the number of appliances and devices you currently have to power, this type of system can support your entire home or just the appliances you feel are required. With the additional batteries, a utility-interactive system costs typically 30% more than a utility-tie system, but you have the added advantage of being able to store solar electric power in batteries for later use.

Stand Alone System

A stand alone system is ideal when you do not have direct connection to public utilities. This type of system may also include additional power generation sources such as wind power and conventional gas generators. This type of system has absolutely no interaction with the power utility grid. The number of solar panels and components are dictated by the overall solar energy requirements of your home. This type of system would be ideal for remote homes, cabins or RVs.
