If you are like me then you probably struggle to really understand why you should bother with solar energy in your home. I live in ireland so we would not be blessed with glorious sunshine 365 days a year, in fact if we got 5 days we would be happy, however after I have studied the key points I made the decision to create my own solar energy house. Well, stick around and I will let you know 5 reasons why I think you should consider this too.

1. It does not need to be "sunny" to harness solar energy. Every day no matter what the conditions are there is a huge amount of solar energy available that we as humans have only begun to exploit. Did you know that the amount of energy available to us on earth from the sun in one hour is more energy than the world uses in one year? The amount of solar energy reaching the surface of the planet is so vast that in one year it is about twice as much as will ever be obtained from all of the Earth's non-renewable resources of coal, oil, natural gas, and mined uranium combined. Best of all -its free and hopefully never ending- so once we have the means to capture it then we will have a free energy source.

2. If we look ahead to the future, without the use of renewable energy such as solar, wind and wave energy, the planet will run out of the traditional fossil fuels in a matter of decades. In fact, if we continue growing our global need for energy at the rate we are currently. we will effectively run out of these traditional materials. Therefore, we do not have any choice but to use renewable energy. So it is my plan to take action now rather than doing it later.

3. Efficiency: solar panel installations have been developed and continue to be improved for use in both domestic and industrial applications. Over the years, solar energy systems have become safe, eco-friendly and extremely efficient.

4. In Ireland we can claim tax relief on any installation cost for renewable energy. I am fairly sure that most other developed countries are offering similar incentives. This, of course, takes the pain out of your wallet which is very important to the roll out of solar energy installations.

5. It will eventually save you money. Depending on the extent of your installation the cost can sometimes be paid back in a relatively short period of time, at the lower end there are some DIY solar panel kits that instruct you how to build your own, you can purchase all the materials for between 100 -200 Euros at your local hardware store. These could run some if not all your domestic needs. At the higher end more expensive options -as always - are available which most likely will have some benefits over the DIY option. consider that if you have too much energy for your own use then there is the possibility to sell energy to the power company. Now who would like that?

These are just a few reasons to consider making the BIG switch to developing a solar energy house.
