Velociraptors were carnivorous (meat eating) dinosaurs that lived during the late Cretaceous period, between about 84 million and 80 million years ago. Fossils of these animals have been found in China and Mongolia. Many people remember Velociraptors from the Jurassic Park movies. They are depicted as fierce but intelligent creatures that can work as a team to hunt down their prey. There certainly seems to be some truth in that depiction, although we can not know for sure if they were able to communicate with each other in the way that is depicted in Jurassic Park III.

Although Velociraptors and other dinosaurs are generally fairly depicted in the Jurassic Park movies - for example, Velociraptor are correctly shown with fearsome teeth and sharp curved claws on their hind legs - the movies do seem to exaggerate the size of these animals (to be fair to the movies and novel, they do refer to a larger related dinosaur, Deinonychus, which has at times been classified as a type of Velociraptor). Although about 6 feet (1.8 meters) long, Velociraptors probably only stood about 3 feet (0.9 meters) tall.

One other interesting thing about Velocirpator in the Jurassic Park movies, it does seem, at times to be depicted as having some bird characteristics.  For example, we seem some bird-like head movements, and in Jurassic Park III, there are some structures like feathers/quills on the animals' neck and head.  We now know however that Velociraptor was covered with feathers, and probably had to some degree a warm-blooded bird-like metabolism.
