12v Solar Panels are designed to be used in small scale solar applications to power 12v devices. These applications would include mobile solar systems such as caravans and motor homes, or small solar installations like powering a small shed or garage.

The purpose of the panel will determine what size panel you need. Smaller panels such as 5, 10, or 25 watts are suitable for charging phones, digital cameras, iPods and laptops and now come in conveniently sized modules for portability and efficiency.

Larger sized panels such as 40, 80 and 130 watts are ideal for powering outdoor lighting or garden features, appliances such as fridges or microwaves or combined in a solar array to power homes in remote areas. 12v solar panels are a convenient, environmentally friendly way of generating electricity and after they are installed, there is no on-going cost or maintenance.

To create a 12 volt system you will also need a solar regulator and batteries to store the solar energy. By storing the energy in a battery, you are guaranteed to always have power no matter what the weather is like. To estimate what sized panels you would need, you need to consider the wattage of the device and how long you would like to power it for.

For example: To light a 20 watt globe for 10 hours will require 200 watts (the wattage rating of any appliance indicates how much power it uses in one hour). Assuming 5 hours of peak sunlight per day, means you will need a solar panel capable of producing 200 watts in 5 hours, i.e. a 40 watt panel.
