For people living remotely who have access to generator energy and want to introduce solar energy into the equation, the solar-generator hybrid system is ideal. In this article I am going to discuss what components you will need to build such a systems as well as the advantages and disadvantages of such a system.

Solar Panel Collection:- You will need a collection of solar panels according to the electricity needs of your property. Once you have established how many panels you will need and where to locate them, you will be able to access the number of batteries you will need in your battery bank.

Battery Bank:- The more power you need to store, the larger your battery bank will need to be. You will also want to take into consideration how much backup energy you will want to store in the bank.

Charge Controller:- In order to transfer the energy from your solar panels to your battery bank, you will need a charge controller which will prevent your batteries from overcharging and damaging them.

Inverter:- The power supplied by your panels and stored by your batteries is in DC or direct current. You will need to convert it into AC in order to use it in your home.

These are the components that you will need for the solar section of your hybrid power system. Your generator may only be used as a backup system when your solar energy has been depleted. Your generator system may consist of a fuel based machine, or it could be generated from wind energy or hydro energy or even technologies such as magnetic energy. Here are some of the possibilities.

Generator:- Your generator may run on oil, propane, gas or some other method. It will generate DC power which will also need to be converted into AC.

Wind Generator:- Your wind turbine is cheap to produce and can be wired directly to the batteries as a result of most of them having a built in charge controller. Some wind turbines also have a built in inverter which means that they can be grid-tied directly.

Hydro Generators:- If you live near running water, then it may be worth the effort of building a water turbine which can be fed into the charge controller.

Magnetic Generator:- These devices produce more energy than they use, are not dependant on weather conditions and are relatively inexpensive to build. The power generated by these devices is both AC and DC and they can be easily integrated into your system.

The Advantages of a Solar-Generator Hybrid System

o Ideal for remote location

o Have backup power sources

o Can be modified to suit various conditions

The Disadvantages of this System

o These systems often require a secondary fuel source

o Installation is more complicated

o Maintenance is more involved
