Someone has rightly said that "getting started is half the work". This adage is especially true when it pertains to anyone who is struggling to come up with the right speech, blueprint of a house or simply a plan for the landscaping of an entire yard. However, once the guidelines have been established, the rest of the work usually goes pretty smoothly. Nevertheless, the most frequent landscaping design questions that are generally asked is "where shall I begin?" or "how do I start my background design?" The only rational reply to that question is that you must first have a well developed vision for the type of arrangement that you are trying to achieve.

Even though professional designers follow a basic set of rules and principles, each blueprint ends up being a unique creation. On the other hand, most 'do it yourselfers' are quite content following the same pattern; simply because they know that it works very well most of the time. The best method is to start by sketching in any of the pathways that may be required by family members or close friends who may be visiting. Every garden should contain a central focal point. It should be something that automatically draws the attention of anyone who happens to be nearby. A well constructed bird bath that has been strategically placed along side of a squirrel proofed bird feeder is always a winning combination. The natural beauty of a variety of multiple colored flowering plants will also add to the feeling of peacefulness and enjoyment. Of course no garden plan that is worth all of the time and effort that it takes to create it will be successful without a fairly large sitting area; preferably one that is in a slightly raised spot that overlooks the entire backyard.

Now, it is time to just sit back and take pleasure in the beautiful work of art that you have fashioned. You may find that more and more of your friends are unexpectedly dropping in because they "simply happened to be in the neighborhood".
