We have all heard the words "going green". The meaning of those words, however, sometimes has not been so clear. Does it mean paint the roof a green color? How do you make a roof "green"? More important, why do we even want to make a roof "green"?

Chicago's City Hall, an eleven story office building, is home to an impressive "green rooftop" garden that covers about 20,300 square feet of the building's roof. Twenty thousand or more plants live there. The continual maintenance of this many plants is a very expensive, time consuming endeavor.

So, why do they do it? First of all, even though this magnificent "green roof" garden adds enormous beauty to the crowded city landscape, there are several other more important benefits in having a "green roof". The plants incorporated in the City Hall rooftop garden improve the air quality in the city by using excess carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. These same green plants absorb the rain water; secreting any water they don't need through pores in their leaves. The excess water then evaporates, cooling the surrounding air; which also keeps the whole building cooler. This entire process conserves energy, reduces excess water drainage and helps lessen the overall heat of the city.

As a result, these "green Roof" gardens reduce green house gases while cleaning the air. Cleaner air makes it a lot easier for people with asthma to breathe. This snowballs into decreased absenteeism from their jobs and increased production when they are working.

As icing on the cake, "green roofs" qualify for tax incentives.
