Everything You Need to Know About DIY Solar Power Kits and How Solar Panels Work

Before you get started with DIY solar power kits, it's important to understand how they work to generate electricity:

• Photons make up sunlight. They carry energy that corresponds to its wavelength of light. Whenever visible light photons strike solar cells, they can be absorbed. If your solar panels are built correctly, this is what will happen. The solar cells contain atoms which absorb the photons and send them through the system, where they will ultimately be used to generate usable electricity.

• Every day, the sun's rays give off 1,000 watts of energy per square meter of the earth's surface. Solar panels are able to collect some of that energy and use it to produce electricity.

• The battery in your solar panels will collect extra energy and store it for later use. Thus, your home can have electricity 24/7! The inverter will transform DC power into usable AC voltage electricity for your home.

• Pure silicon isn't a very good conductor of electricity, because it doesn't allow the electrons to freely move about. Copper is actually a better conductor of electricity than pure silicon. Thus, the silicon found in DIY solar panel kits contains impurities. These are other atoms that are mixed in to make it easier for the electrons to move about.

Whether you choose to buy complete kits or build your own solar panels from scratch, you need to figure out where to install them once they're built. Keep in mind that not every roof is ideal for solar panels. A precise orientation is needed in order for your home to receive the electricity from the solar cells. The panels must be inclined at an angle near to your area's latitude.
