If you are considering building your own solar panels, there are a few things you should keep in mind; having the right materials is one of them. Here are a few things that can be bought at most hardware stores which we outlined.
Solar Cells
This one being an exception from buying at hardware stores, they are pretty much the heart of the project. You can find lot of different types online and some do better than other so it would really depend on your budget. If you are wanting to save on them, you can also buy broken ones and join them together.
Plywood
You can buy plywood at any hardware store. Be sure that you are getting something of good quality and it should be around three-eight of an inch think. This will be used as your platform for your solar panel.
2-Pin Plug
You'll also need a 2-pin plug so could connect or disconnect your solar panel from the whole system. You need to be able to do so since if you'll have to remove it to maintain or fix something etc. It is much better off than leaving it permanently attached.
Silicone or Epoxy
The number one reason why soar panels deteriorates over time or starts to malfunction is because of moisture. I cannot stress on how important it is to seal your solar panel properly. Silicone that is usually used in your house for sealing tubs and kitchen kinks is usually what is recommended.
Glue And Screws
You will need some wood or super glue to hold things together as well. Personally, I'd use super glue since wood glue tends to take more time to take complete effect. Keep in mind that you will have to screw everything together so it doesn't matter which ever one you use.
Electrical Wires
In order to make everything work, you will need wires to complete the whole circuit and make things run properly. Use different colored wires this way you won't get mixed up in the polarity.
Outdoor Paint
As mentioned earlier, you need to keep all the moisture out and one way of effectively doing it is by having a good outdoor paint. It will also protect it against other things and keep it looking good.
Diode
The worse thing that can happen to a solar system is usually getting your battery discharged into the solar panels at night. That will drain all of the batteries energy and leave you powerless. That being said, you need a diode to keep things running one way and not the other.
Plexiglas
The Plexiglas will protect your solar cells from any outside elements from damaging them and will keep them running for a long time. The reason for using Plexiglas is simply because is it easier to work with than regular glass and it is more shatter resistant. Lexan glass is also a good alternative.
Deep Cycle Battery
You will need a good deep cycle battery in order to conserve that energy and keep all of you appliances running overnight or on cloudy times.
A Good Instructional Guide
Now that you have all of you materials needed in order to build your own solar panel system, you will need a good guide to take you through all the steps needed.
That being said, you can find yourself an excellent guide by going to the following at: http://buildhomemadesolarpanels.net
