How to Plan Now For Your in-Home Safety During a Natural Emergency Disaster Situation

To remain in your home you must have whatever necessities you need for a period of time. Keep in mind, for example, during a natural disaster, it is unlikely you will have access to a medical facility, a pharmacy or a grocery store. Therefore, there are a number of items you should definitely have, all of which should be part of your Basic Emergency Supply Kit. Ready.gov-the official website for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Ready Campaign to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies suggests that your kit should include:

• Water-One gallon of water per person, per day, for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation purposes.
• Food- Have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. (And, equally important, make sure you have a manual can opener – you're going to need it to open any kind of canned food.)
• A Battery-powered or Hand-cranked radio and a NOAA Weather radio, with tone alert and extra batteries for both.
• At least one flashlight and extra batteries for it.
• A Dust Mask-This may come in handy to help filter contaminated air.
• Plastic sheeting and duct tape to cover broken windows
• Moist towellettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• A few key non-electric tools – in particular, a wrench or a pair of pliers to turn off utilities
• A good, old-fashioned manual can opener. (Vital if you are going to open canned food)
• Local maps
• A cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
• Any prescription medications you take, with enough to get you through at least a week, longer if possible. In addition, make a list of dosage, treatment and allergy information related to your or your loved ones' medicines. Don't forget to also include your glasses.

 

Other items to consider:

• Pet food, pet medications and extra water for pets.
• Important family documents, such as copies of insurance policies, identification and back account records in a waterproof, portable container
• Cash or Traveler's Checks and change
• Emergency reference material such as a first aid book
• A sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person
• A few complete changes of clothing
• Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper.  Note: When diluted as a mixture of nine parts water to one part bleach, this solution can be used as a disinfectant.  Or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water.  Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
• A fire extinguisher
• Matches in a waterproof container
• Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
• Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
• Books, games, puzzles or other recreation-type activities to keep you, your children or your grandchildren mentally-occupied over an extended period of time
