Have Your Rv Dealers Show You The Battery Bank

It is vital for the battery bank in your RV to work well, and to be properly charged. This is one of the important things you can discuss with your RV dealers before you buy.

What is the battery bank?

The battery bank is not the same as your vehicle battery. The vehicle battery is only concerned with starting your truck fifth wheel. The battery bank is the power source for running all of your appliances, your lights, water pump, slide-outs, furnace, and any other 12-volt gadgets you may have in your Class C RV.

Your battery bank is a way to store electricity for use in your RV. This is especially important if you are going dry camping. Your motor home's deep cycle battery is designed to put out a small amount of current over a long period of time. Care must be taken with recharging the deep cycle battery because if the amps are too high, it may damage the plate.

Recharging the batteries

The average life span of your house batteries is between 2 and 3 years. Often they die before their time due to neglect. When your batteries are low, they should be recharged promptly but slowly over a period to extend battery life. Both overcharging, and undercharging a battery will shorten its usefulness.  The goal is to bring your house batteries to full charge each day.

When a battery is overcharged, or undercharged, sulfation may take place. This is when particles of sulfuric acid from the electrolyte form on the battery. This also shortens the battery life.

Battery life is shortened by not charging the batteries when your RV is in storage. It is not enough to leave the Class B RV plugged in. Unfortunately, that may be too much current for the battery, and then the battery will be useless.

Some solutions to the battery issues

One way to charge your batteries without running too much current through them and spoiling them is to install some solar panels on your small travel trailer. This gentle current will charge your batteries without overcharging them.

Another good choice is a battery charger. There are various models available, but you'd want one that not only charges the battery without overcharging it, but will also dissolve any sulfation that is taking place.

If you know your batteries, and take care of them, they will last longer, and work better.
