Cheap swimming pool covers a false saving
As the weather, especially in the UK, is becoming less and less predictable it is more important than ever to have a solar cover on your outdoor swimming pool as not only do these help to heat the pool when the sun does show itself, but it will also help reduce the chemical loss due to evaporation and it will also help to reduce the amount of debris that ends up in the pool and subsequently the filter. Therefore lots of savings all round.
However, as with most things in life, there are the very cheap options but are these even worth considering?
It really depends what you want the cover to achieve, there are cheap summer pool covers that you basically put onto the surface of the water that contain bubbles that collect the heat from the sun and pass that onto the surface of the water. It is always best to opt for the best quality on these covers and go for one that is edged, otherwise cheaper materials will go brittle and then split which will mean it is very difficult to put the cover on and off and inevitably you will end up with bits of the cover floating on the pool and clogging your filter! As the cover degrades you will probably loose more heat than it puts into the pool and therefore defeat the object of having the cover in the first place.
If safety is your main concern then you will want a safety swimming pools cover which will withstand children and small animals walking onto the cover without it collapsing into the water. Again there are various types, some manual or automatic and some are completely rigid for full protection against accidents. These safety covers are not cheap so you really must do your research before committing to one company as they should be able to provide you with a cover to suit your budget and fulfil the needs of your requirements.
Additionally you will need a winter cover which are generally placed right over the pool surround and fixed into the ground, to prevent debris, leaves, etc getting into the pool when everything is shut down. The cheap versions of these covers are liable to tear when they get heavy with rain and thus then let in dirt. You should ensure that your debris cover is made from a strong mesh which will allow rain water to go through it into the pool rather than pooling on the top and making it sag.
One alternative to all these types of cover is a pool enclosure which is a telescopic glass structure that is placed over the pool and creates a room so that even in bad weather you can swim and use the pool. As it is like a conservatory it will heat up the air inside the pool enclosure which in turn will help to heat the pool water and depending on the size you can have the enclosure it can also encapsulate a hot tub or gym equipment giving you an indoor leisure area which can easily and quickly be opened back to then give you an outdoor pool area when the weather is good

Running a swimming pool in the UK needs some careful consideration which is why having a swimming pool cover is a must to keep running cost down in the same way the a hot tub cover is a must along with replacement hot tub covers
