A food dehydrator is a great addition to any kitchen. Its ability to create delicious healthy snacks, as well as its role in food preservation, makes the food dehydrator an indispensable tool for vegans and vegetarians alike.

It will be rather comforting to know that the snacks that are consumed by your family do not have to be the store-bought, commercially-made kind. With a food dehydrator, the snack possibilities are endless; as many variations of healthy, all-natural snacks can be easily made at home.

This article will give you some great ideas for making scrumptious, yummy treats in your dehydrator.

Dried Peach Wedges

Peaches are normally an all-time favorite fruit, loved by adults and children alike. The process of making these healthy dried snacks is rather simple. Just peel, cut in half, remove the seed and then quarter. Fruits tend to become discolored when exposed to air, if you so desire, dip pieces in lime juice for a few minutes, to avoid this. Pop into the dehydrator and your job is done. The time required for complete drying will depend on the power of your dehydrator, as well as the size of the wedges.

Wedges are done when there is absolutely no moisture when cut and examined.

Raisins!

If you have never made raisins at home, now is the time to try this simple recipe. You will find, however, that you home made raisins taste slightly different from the usual store bought varieties. This is because yours are totally natural, with preserving agents.

Place washed grapes in dehydrator at approximately 135 degrees. Slicing the grapes in half will speed up the drying process.

Yummy Fruit Leathers

It will be extremely hard to find a person who does not enjoy fruit roll-ups. They are absolutely delicious and are fun to eat. Though readily available at grocery stores, your home made version will be absolutely healthy with no additives.

A very common method of making fruit leathers is by starting with cooked fruit, this is optional, as you can just start the process with raw fruit, if you so desire. Blend fruit until it is smooth; a small amount of water can be added, only if absolutely necessary. Pour fruit puree onto non stick trays, and place in your dehydrator at 140 degrees. The duration of the drying process is dependent on the moisture content of the puree; however, expect to wait for approximately 6-8 hours.

When fully dry, peel from sheets, cut into strips and roll. Yum Yum!!

Crunchy Banana Chips

This is a fantastic treat to make at home. You can enjoy the crispy, tasty treat without the usual unhealthy accompaniments; such as hydrogenated oil and salt. Simple slice, dip in lime juice and place in dehydrator, preferably overnight - depending on the level of crispiness you enjoy!

These chips make for an excellent substitute for popcorn on home movie night!

With the current ease of access to unhealthy snacks, it can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Now with the food dehydrator you can actually make it easy for yourself to eat right!
