Waukegan Kia Dealer Has Details About Kia Ray's Debut At Chicago Auto Show

Green technology wrapped up in a fighter-jet inspired body is what admirers of the hew Kia Ray plug-in hybrid can expect and may see integrated into other Kia models in the future. Chicago Kia Soul dealers can't wait to share the details after seeing this concept car unveiled at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. The Ray has some cutting-edge technologies to reduce emissions and stretch fuel.
The Ray's blend of engineering and bold design results in a four-seat compact modeled after the Kia Forte but looking more like something out of Star Wars. Offering maximum efficiency with flush, aerodynamic surfaces, a clean profile and a prominent rear shoulder with slightly higher deck to reduce drag, customers of Round Lake used cars will want to be the first in their crowd to check out a green car with style.
Part of its efficiency comes from the lightweight materials used in the assemblage. On the green side, recycled materials are used wherever possible on the new Ray and hexagonal solar cells in a glass roof panel are used to power up the climate control system or extra lighting. The Ray claims a range of more than 50 miles solely on electric charge and its fuel economy rating is above 202 mpg for a total range of 746 miles.
Touch-screen controls and drive-by-wire steering are only the beginning of the innovations in the Ray plug-in. When the gasoline engine is being used, the front headlamps slide back to allow for more air intake and a sliding deck lid extends from the rear when the car travels at higher speeds to counter drag.
Chicago Kia Soul buyers will love this - talk about sleek! In place of side mirrors and door handles, motion detector cameras, flush with the car body, allow for safe lane changes and open the doors for you. To allow for easier entry, front door openings have cutouts for the feet and rear-hinged doors are not only stylish but shaped  to allow smooth entry and exit.
Use of cool-glazing materials to reduce solar hear and a white interior to reflect heat will reduce use of air conditioning and thus reduce emissions. The solar cell also runs a cooling fan to help regulate interior temperature when that shady parking spot is elusive. The seats are a composite of lightweight materials and are mounted on the side sills to simulate a floating effect. Elastomeric materials support body weight. Voice-and touch-activated controls allow for safe management of music and phone operation.
Powered by an all-aluminum 153-horsepower Gasoline Direct Injected 1.4-liter engine connected to a permanently-engaged fixed ratio Continuously Variable Transmission and combined with a 78kw electric motor, the Ray PHEV also boasts an engine power-saving alternator management system. The toggle gear shift support economic driving and the Ray rolls on custom 20-inch low-rolling tires.
