Standalone Solar Powered Light Bulbs to the Rescue

Stephen Katsaros of Colorado dubs his new light bulb the Nokero. It is a portable, standalone light bulb powered by the sun's solar energy. This is particularly great news for the estimated 1.6 billion people across the globe who do not have access to electricity (and consequently cannot use standard light bulbs) and must use kerosene lamps or candlelight when the sun has departed the sky.

A factory in China will, depending on demand, be making 600,000 to 1.2 million of these solar powered light bulbs per month. This is great news for nearly a quarter of world still burning fuel for light. The Nokero light bulb should be a great help for those countries in which residents spend 5% of their yearly income on polluting, inefficient kerosene lamps. As a standalone solar powered light bulb, it can function and thrive in countries without electrical infrastructure.

Demand for the light bulb is already high, as orders flow in from 33 countries. The Nokero costs around $6 per bulb when purchased in bulk, and around $15 for single purchases. $15 is a great deal of money in a lot of countries, so unfortunately this light bulb will not immediately make it to the countries that need it most. Still, it will provide a great service to those countries and people that can afford it.

These solar powered light bulbs are constructed with impact-resistance plastic which also protects them from rain and damp environments. The lamps and batteries are controlled by specially designed computer chips which extend life and ensure efficient lamp operation. Internal batteries are charged by the solar energy of the sun via four solar panels on the body of the light bulb. After a day in the sun, a single Nokero light bulb should be able to emit light for up to four hours.
