This really depends on the type of wiring already existing in your household and what types of loads you want to run. DC appliances are usually more efficient than AC appliances, however, DC appliances are more expensive and are generally more difficult to find. Small cabin and recreational vehicles (RV) are typically wired direct current (DC) while most other homes are wired for alternating current (AC) loads.

This is where an inverter will come in useful. Most solar panel systems are equipped with inverters that convert DC to AC. There are three main types of inverters:

Standalone inverters: These are used in isolated systems where the inverter draws energy from batteries which were charged by photovoltaic panels. Most standalone inverters also include battery chargers that replenish the battery from an AC source when available. These usually do not interface with a utility grid thus the term "standalone."

Grid tie inverters: These inverters are designed to shut down automatically wen there is no electricity going to it including at night or cloudy days. They do not provide backup in outages.

Battery backup inverters: These are special inverters that are designed to draw electricity from batteries, and manage the battery charge from an onboard charger. When it builds up excess electricity, it exports it to the utility grid.

Chances are you will be using alternating current (AC) in your home because that is what your current appliances are most likely operating on. Another advantage of AC over DC is that the voltage drop in a 120VAC circuit is a lot less than a 12VDC circuit carrying the same power. This is because the gauge of the wire is much smaller in the AC situation.
