Solar panels work on some pretty interesting technolgy but their use and application is far from tricky. If you are buying "off-the-shelf", it is basically plug-n-play. However, if you are feeling more independent or simply want to keep costs to a minimum, you can install a DIY solar energy system at least to supply part of your home needs. Be aware that many rebates for using solar systems may not be available with a DIY system as many schemes require professional certification to qualify. However, the DIY savings can be considerable if you have the time and skills.

How much does a DIY solar power system cost?
This depends greatly on how you want to supplement your power. The bigger the system, the bigger the cost (you need more or stronger solar cells). While a solar panel can be built for less than $200, you will need to calculate the power usage you wish to cover to build a suitable system. Remember, you will also likely need a professional to connect your system to your house power supply.

Is your property suitable for solar power?
For a DIY solar project, your first consideration is where is and how much sun do you get. Solar panels will produce power even under cloudy skies, but at a lower rate. I have seen roof top panels in Berlin, Germany, a city known as "gray and cloudy". However, a site that is unshaded and sun facing is a basic requirement. In reality you will need 2 or 4 solar panels to be really useful and that means a space of about 3 to 5 square meters of space. This can be a roof or even a garden wall.
Small scale projects mostly don't need planning permission, however, it is best to enquire with your local authority to avoid hassles further down the line.

DIY solar systems don't have to be just for providing home energy. They can be used to run garden lighting, water pumps, ground source heat pumps, garage lighting and many other applications not tied to the house system.
