There is no doubt about the fact that the cost of power for residential homes is rising each time a bill is delivered to your post box from your electricity or utilities provider. It seems that no matter how many unused lights, computers, sound boxes or other electrical appliances you get to turn off each time you find one unused in an attempt to save your power bill the bill still seems to rise beyond your anticipation.
Some thoughtful people have had power audits conducted on their homes to find out where the biggest user of electricity exists. A friend of mine had this done and was surprised to learn that it was her refrigerator. She had three children under 16 at the time and they all used the fridge at different times after school and on weekends. What they all had in common was the way they used the fridge. They all opened the fridge door and stood there looking in while the cold air escaped all around them.
This meant that the fridge was always working; cooling the air again and again to get the set temperature aligned to the settings the thermostat was set for. It was this constant cooling action that was chewing into the power bill even more hungrily than the kids when they were examining the 'goodies' to eat in the fridge.
Once the family was made aware of these small actions that contributed to such big savings, they were able to go and buy a new fridge that was graded as a more energy efficient model. Needless to say there were heaps of lessons in there for parents and kids alike and I doubt any fridge was ever bought with so much joy and satisfaction as that family enjoyed together that day. But the lessons didn't end there.
The energy saving has became a family affair and they all put their heads together and have come up with the idea of putting any savings they are able to make towards becoming even more energy efficient. They went over the power bills for the past twelve months and decided that those previous monthly costs would be the mark they had to beat and anything saved was put into the family 'solar fund'.This solar fund is still a work in progress but they believe that with all the savings they are able to make simply by turning lights off, keeping hot water usage at a minimum and generally thinking about the power they are using for each activity, they will soon have their dream of a totally solar powered house.
