The Body.

Wind generator can be made from wood but its not a long term proposition ,but normally wind turbines are made from steel and will last forever requiring painting every couple of years.

The BODY

Square steel section about 40 inch. long but can be longer. On one end is welded a flat round steel plate for mounting the motor. A hole to match the size of the shaft is drilled in the middle (slight clearance). Mounting holes to line up with motor brackets.

The TAIL.

Square, round or whatever shape you like can be made for the tail. Material can also be wood but steel or even plastic can be used and will last longer. The project wind generator tail uses flat steel about 10x12 inch. Pop riveted to the body but this could be welded. The most important thing to remember with the tail, it has to be large enough to be able to turn the wind turbine into the wind.

The MOTOR.

The generator motor need to be permanent magnet type and needs to produce high voltage at very low rpm. Ideal motors (ametek) are purchased from eBay and can be bought cheap. GMC motor generators can be used with a slight modification to them. Mainly removing the field coils and replacing with permanent magnets.

The BLADES.

Most common material used is PVC pipe. Underground type is better as it is thicker and easy to work with and shape. Resist flexing in strong winds. Marking out the shape for cutting is simple with easy to follow instructions using A4 paper and a marker. Different lengths and widths are used for various size motors so as the wind is capable of turning the wind power generator, too small and the blades will remain stationary. The position of the blades on the hub is critical for rotation as to what will be positive or negative on the outgoing wires. The blades (3) need to be position 180 degree apart and then balanced.

The TOWER.

Any old radio mast or street pole can be used. Parking lot light poles are sometimes easier to come by. Wind generator tower needs to higher than the roof of the house if you have placed the tower on the lee side. Guy ropes can be used with the poles for security in high winds.

The CABLE.

10 or 20 gauge extension lead wired into the motor and cable tired to the outside of post or tower. Very rarely will the wind generator turn 360 degree to twist the cable around the pole. A Diode has to be placed in the circuit to stop discharge of batteries when the wind stops. A dump load has to be set up for the overcharging effect of the wind generator in strong winds.

Maintenance.

1. Check the wiring for sun damage

2. Check for surface rust on body and paint if necessary

3. Check the bolts and nuts on wind generator blades. (Should have self locking nuts).

4. Check the motor bearing for wear and replace if necessary.
