One of my New Year resolutions was to be committed to total recycling, which took me a little more effort than the average person, as I use a walker to be mobile. The plastic bins for recyclables at the curb do not work for me, as I can't get them back and forth to the curb.
So my papers and recycling are put in grocery paper bags with handles. Once a month I don't use my go green cloth grocery bags for my grocery shopping, I get the paper bags for my recycling. Otherwise, I always use my go green cloth grocery bags and any plastic bags I acquire from other shopping I take to the store to place in their plastic bag recycle bin.
During tax season I was busy shredding old not need papers when my shredder would not shred any more. Off to the store I go to get a new one and now here I am faced with my first true test to my recycling commitment - disposing of the broken electric shredder.
I live in what I call a small "toy" house and garage, so storing is not an option. On my recent travels on the 56 freeway in San Diego I noticed a landfill and recycling center, Miramar Landfill.
I loaded my car with the shredder, defunct water fountain cords; waterfall pumps and cords; old cell phones and cords; all old electrical cords and cord connectors and made a commitment to pay the landfill a visit.
This goddess/princess had never been to the dump before, so I was not sure what to expect and/or what the procedure was. So up I drive with my small load of old treasures and there before my eyes was a hub of activities. People, cars, trucks, piles of discarded items, no direction or knowing where to begin. It was not clear where to park and it seemed like everything and everyone was in motion, finally I just decided to park as close as I could to an area that looked like there could be a drop off area.
As I was sitting in my car trying to figure out the procedure, about three refuse engineers came towards my car to assist me, so I opened my door to ask my questions and they were discussing who was going to help me, my personal guided "tour" guide said "she is mine, I am going to help her. Guess he had seniority, as the other two went on about their regular duties. This marvelous Guardian Angel Tour Guide greeted me with a huge smile and good afternoon, held my door for me, got my walker out, asked what I was bringing in, got it out of my car, told me what needed to happen, weighed my shredder, got my ticket for how much it would cost me to dispose the shredder, I gave him the funds and he took the funds and ticket to the pay window, brought me my change and helped me back in the car, put my walker back in the car and wished me a wonderful day and thanked me for coming in. IMAGINE VALET SERVICE at the dump. What an Angel!!!! Spirituality happens even at the dump.
I really do believe this is one of my most pleasant experiences I have ever had the pleasure to experience in all of public service. Definitely this was a true definition of public service. A true testimonial for someone to love where they are and to make a difference in another's life. Who says going green can't be fun, I left with a feeling of joy and bliss and in love with life and all the joys in simple things that happen to us each and every day.
What a wonderful gift, of meeting this thoughtful man, all because I made a commitment to participate in total recycling. I could have missed this experience had I not made my News Year resolution and then there is the fact of not being good to Mother Earth by just dumping the electrical shredder in the garbage and not recycling it.
These refuse engineers are to be honored and applauded for the work they do for us day after day. Doing this work that we take for granted, or even worse yet never even give it a thought after we put it out to the curb. They work with our discards day after day and still have something left over to be of personal service when they have the opportunity to.
