It's hot outside and darn, it's hot inside. Here's a few tips to help stay cool.
Looks like it's going to be in the high 90's again today. For the most part, I like the hot weather for a couple reasons. First, it is so wet and cold in this part of the country so much of the time, I really like any day when there isn't a cloud in the sky. At least for that one day, I know it's not going to rain. And second, The hot weather has never really bothered me. I seem to get along OK when the temperature crowds three digits. I'm not as young as I used to be, so maybe that will change.
Let's look at several things you might want to do to protect yourself from a house that has gotten too hot.
1. Plan a visit to a cool spot. Come on, it only makes sense. If it's too hot in your house, go somewhere cool. Senior center, shopping mall, casino, the coast, the mountains, someone's basement. So many places have air conditioning, finding a cool place is a good idea.
If you just can't get away from your hot house, then try this to help reduce the heat.
1. If the night time is cooler, open the house up at night and close the house up during the day. Have you ever entered a house that was for sale and the house was empty? Did you notice that even though the temperature outside was hot, the inside of the empty house was cooler than you might expect? That is because an empty house does not have people opening and closing the doors - an empty house does not have heat producing appliances contributing to the temperature rise - computers, T.V, refrigerator, coffee pot, hot water, toaster, dryer, lights, exhaust fans, etc. If you have opened the house up during the cool night and then closed the house up during the day - then do not turn on the heat producing appliances. ( except maybe the refrigerator ) Some homes, like manufactured homes, even have the water heater inside the home. A tank full of hot water can radiate heat to the house. Consider turning the hot water heater off at the electric panel till the heat wave passes.
2. To help close the house up during the day and reflect the heat of the sun, cover the inside of the windows that get direct sunlight with tin foil. Once the tinfoil is in place to reflect the heat, cover the windows with a think curtain or blanket, this will further insulate the window from the radiating heat.
3. Do not turn on exhaust fans. Exhaust fans, like the bathroom ceiling fan or the range hood fan, draw air out of the house. Warm air from outside is then sucked into the house to replace the air that is being forced out. The same thing happens if you dry a load of clothes and the dryer is inside the house.
Well, I hope the hot spell does not last too long and I hope my suggestions will be of some help.
Come back soon, and remember, if it's hot inside...I won't leave the lights on for you...
