Pir sensors are very commonly known as passive infraRed sensor, they are an electronic component or device that infrared light radiants from, things that are in the area of the sensors view. When an object or thing passes in the view of the device for example a person they are detected by the body temperature which is a temperature compared to the standard temperature the pir detector or has recorded. Then assuming that then triggers an alarm of some sort because of a temperature difference. These sensors were originally used in the military then later on for scientific purposes in the 1940s.

This radiation is what the pir's detect it's invisible to the human eye, so this sensor detects that change by using a passive form of radiation which is in fact put out by the object that passes in front of the area of the detector. The way this works is then not too complicated but can be if someone is actually trying to not be detected. Another main use for this is for lights that turn on only when you're in the area it supposed to save power and also be good as one doesn't have to turn on and off a switch to get light into the area for possible a hallway, patio, side of house places where one wouldn't also be.

The position is somewhere the sun won't get to it or not near water as sun reflects off the water. Always to the side of the main object to be detected e.g. to light up a garage for your car as in the light for pir's would be best to the side of the driveway rather than directly in the driveway so to set it off only when a car approaches not sometimes from objects passing by in the street.

There are a few different versions of a sensors one particular one is the based motion detector. This one works with cylindral facet lens which sits in the front of the pir sensor. Each with a Fresnel lens some with clear plastic in the front or obscured, depending on the type of detector. Installation of a detector is critical in not setting off false alarms and at the same time to not miss the potential intruder either. Behind a window is ideal but not too obscured as the sensor won't work at all. Sometimes a flashing light or car lights may fool the it and set it off. So placement is important. The range of the most common of these pir detectors are around 30m away if placed in a good all round position. The detection area is left to right and vice a versa, up or down and functions correctly in all of these areas.

A lot of the devices are solar powered therefore not needing the power or AC connection to work also a chargeable Ni Cid batteries usually will last a few weeks until it needs recharging. The pir sensor can be susceptible to weather so if really hot the sensor can be known to not perform at its best and actually have a lot of false alarms. When cold the detector may not work at all because of the cold, generally between 20-30C it's the optimal temperature to work at its best.
