Resources for energy, especially the nonrenewable ones like fossil fuels, are already depleting. This alarming case has prompted the scientists and other experts to look for alternative sources of power, especially those that came from natural sources like the sunlight, wind, geothermal heat, and rain. It is also a great concern of the experts to harness these resources at optimum level. When harnessed, these sources become renewable energy since they can be replenished.

One of these renewable energies is solar energy. The radiant light and heat from the sun have been harnessed since the ancient times. Ways to use this energy has always been changing because of the developments in technology. However, up to now, only a miniscule amount of the available solar energy is used.

The most common way to harvest solar energy is through the use of solar panels. A home solar power systems is technically called a photovoltaic module or photovoltaic panel. This module or panel is composed of interconnected photovoltaic cells, or simply solar cells. This attribute of the solar cells to be aligned as an array contributes greatly to the capacity of the solar panel to gather energy. Since it is easy to fit various panels in a mounting system, it is feasible have a greater output of energy to provide electricity to different areas.

These solar cells are commonly used to provide electricity to remote areas like the satellites orbiting our planet. The satellites are installed with solar panels to catch the sun's rays, convert it to electricity and power up the machinery. Right now, solar energy is also seen as a viable option to power small houses and businesses through electricity.

The use of photovoltaics can be applied in three ways: stand-alone, grid-connected and back-up.
Also called solar home system, or SHS, stand-alone is not connected to the grid. Compared to an energy system that uses electricity cables, SHS is cheaper and more portable for remote areas like holiday cottages or rest houses. Energy from the SHS can be stored for use when there is no sunshine.

Grid-connected is a system where the utility is connected to the property. This is a more sustainable system since the electricity is obtained both from the energy stored in the battery and from the grid.

Back-up is a system commonly used where a lot of power blackouts occur. This uses a more unreliable or poor-quality grid since it is only used as a back-up.

Typically constructed with crystalline silicon, solar panels are also sometimes used in other industries like in microprocessors. Other solar cells use the gallium arsenide instead, which is a more expensive alternative. More developed and more efficient panels uses deposited amorphous silicon alloy. In a process called Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells, or A-si, the solar cells are in a continuous roll-to-roll process. Additionally, the use of amorphous silicon technology guarantees a more durable, efficient, and thinner panels than the crystalline-made ones.

It is true that solar energy is the best possible source of energy right now, especially since the sun is always there. The only limitation is the technological prowess of man to properly harness this energy and convert it to usable electricity.
