Foam board insulation installations are easy fixes to energy saving programs that you'd like to partake in, either at the city or county level of your property. If you're interested in tax credits, or cash reimbursements for energy saving installations on your house, foam boarding is a great way to realize and achieve these. Or if you're just interested in cooling down your house, foam boarding is an easy, inexpensive way to do this. It's fun, even, and you can do it yourself.
Foam boarding is relatively easier to do than basement renovations, re-roofing projects, sound proofing projects for home studios... Foam boarding is considered a family past time in hyper active real estate markets such as San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland (Oregon)... You can readily find and buy foam boarding materials at your local Lowe's or Home Depot-or even online, to get the best price possible.
These products are relatively commoditized, in that the features don't really waiver from its core set, and the prices don't really vary as much. You'll want to stay away from purchasing used foam boarding materials. And foam boarding kits, could cost as much as $1,000. So you'll want to really make sure you're picking up the right product, if you're going to go with a kit; you'll want to see the product up close and personal, at your home supplies and hardware store. See the department where you'll find fireproof insulation, mineral wool insulation and the like.
Foam boarding projects should be done before the sweltering summer heat kicks in, but shouldn't be done when there's a high chance of rains or wind storms. For the obvious reasons, you'll be taking apart roof areas, wall areas, and window areas, and you don't want to be doing this sort of work while it's storming.
Foam boarding safety
When you're foam boarding, it's important to work with the proper safety equipment. The foam used is insulation is filled with all sorts of dangerous particulates, and it's critical that you use some sort of inhibitor to guard your breaths from taking in too much of the foam debris. This sort of safety equipment can range from a simple mask to a full on mask and helmet. Now, which you should select, is a matter of the size of your project, the scale of your foaming objectives, and the ages and physical conditions of yourself and those that will be helping. If you're susceptible to respiratory episodes such as asthmatic attacks then you will not want to include yourself or those persons that have those ailments in this project. If they insist, a full on mask will likely be required. Consult your physician before having that person partake in the fun home improvement project.
Aside from the mask, you'll want to use gloves, and you'll want to be well covered, from head to toe. The foam can get into crevices, and the foam is known to be a hyper allergen that can provoke skin outbreaks resulting from ailments that have been sitting idle in physiological systems, just waiting for the right kind of allergen to set them off. So, cover from head to toe; wear a mask, and: most importantly, do not eat or drink while doing this project. This isn't a jigsaw puzzle sort of family activity. This isn't a card game sort of family activity. You have to protect your openings-those on your bodies-and avoid skin contact of any kind in order to prevent allergic reactions.
Safety aside, a foam boarding home improvement project can be extremely satisfying, can bring a family together, and can make for a good excuse to have a heart to heart with a significant other or one of your children. It's easy to do, and very affordable. From the planning stage, to the building stage, to the experience stage in which you observe marked or unnoticeable (hopefully not) results, the whole process is sure to take your family relationship or relationships to the next level.
Foam boarding is easy and relatively self explanatory, but there are plenty of self-help and self-starter guides out there, some published by Home Depot themselves, and you're encouraged to look these titles up, if not purchase them, during your foam boarding planning stage.
