Not only are tabletop fountains beautiful accent pieces for any table or desk, they are fairly easy to maintain as long as a few simple steps are followed. While it appears that water flows effortlessly from the fountain head to the water basin of a fountain, an electrical pump is constantly at work pumping water back to the top of the structures. This water pump needs to be cared for to ensure its longevity. If the electrical pump and its accessories are well maintained, gravity will take care of the external flow of the water completing the circular water system.

It will come as no surprise that water is the key element of any fountain. However, not just any water should be used. Tap water, for instance, tends to contain a large amount of chemical impurities and minerals that will build up over time. Using tap water is a good way to block up the pump system and to form unattractive deposits on the fountain itself. To be safe, use distilled water which has already had minerals and chemicals extracted. If you do not want to deal with the extra cost or hassle of replenishing your distilled water supply, consider a simple system for treating your tap water to rid it of most impurities.

Using a specified mark in the water reservoir of your tabletop water fountain, check the basin daily to make sure that water levels are where they should be. Replenish water supplies with distilled or purified water as needed.

Other steps can be taken to extend the life of the pump system in your tabletop fountain. Besides avoiding water containing minerals and other impurities, the pump itself should be checked regularly as, no matter what type of water is used, algae and dirt will accumulate. Such deposits will clog the pump causing it to lose it effectiveness. In addition, it will have to work harder running it down quicker than necessary. Typically, the pump should be cleaned every two months. However, depending on the dust, pet hair and other accumulates in your home or office, it may need to be cleaned more or less often.

The smaller size of tabletop water fountains makes them easier to maintain than larger fountains. For instance, when the water needs to be changed out completely, as should be done periodically, the entire structure can be turned over to empty its contents of old water. Remember to refill with distilled or purified tap water.
