When researching building a solar panel yourself there is a mountain of information available online. The DIY Green Energy movement is exploding right now and it's bringing tons of great info to the web, but how do you know what to trust? Let's go over 3 things to consider before attempting a build yourself.

1.) Parts, tool and costs - When looking at building solar panels yourself one of the main goals is usually saving some money. So it's important to know where you can cut costs and where cost will cut you. Despite what you may think, one of the best places to cut your costs is going to be on the solar cells themselves. buying what are termed as A- or B grade cells, cells with chips or cracks, may have little impact on your end power results but will save you tons of money upfront. Look for sellers online and on eBay who resell these less than perfect cells from the factory. Places not to skimp are in the charging controller, which can damage your batteries, and on a soldering iron. If you're going to make panels of any size you're going to be doing a lot of soldering and will want good temperature control and comfort. Other tools such as saws, screw drivers and caulk guns you may have around or be able to borrow/buy used without any impact on your panels.

2. ) Types of cells - There are two types of widely available solar cells, Mono-crystalline and multi-crystalline. The great thing to know is even if you have to mix and match the two types, it will work just fine. However there are advantages to both. Mono Cells provide higher power per inch. Using Mono Cells will decrease the overall size of your panels for the same output. However although Multi Cells are less efficient 16% to the Mono 17-18%, they do cost less. So if size is not a factor in your build but cost is, you will want to choose Multi-Crystalline Cells.

3.) Watts and Amps - With all that talk about power, how do we measure what we need or what we'll get? To find that we use the formula; Voltage X Amperage x Cells = Watts. In English the formula for say, if i build a panel built using 35 0.55 volt, 3.6 amp cells would be this: Voltage of each cell (0.55 v) X rated Amperage of each cell (3.6 a) X 35 cells = 69.3 Watts From this you will be able to match up against your power needs, different appliance and electronics require all different voltages and amperage's, so check in with your user documentation or technical specs for your stuff!
